Punk Pigeons
by Daniel Finn
Pigeons are super underrated and these are the most punk pigeons out there.
Pigeon are a five-piece band from Margate, UK that fuse afrobeat, post-punk, and afro-disco into something uniquely theirs.
Their debut Yagana EP was born out of a post-pub jam session. Guinean singer Falle Nioke sings in Susu, Wolof, and Malinke, his voice carries longing, lust, and the ache of being far from home. The songs range from up-tempo disco to brooding jazz rhythms and fuzzy, grunge-tinged textures.
On their follow-up, Backslider EP, Pigeon lean harder into structure and synth influence. Drum machines and sequencers meet live jamming, giving the songs more dynamic contrast. Vocally, Falle moves between English, French, and his native West African languages, weaving stories of heartache, truth, and self-respect.
Listening to Pigeon is eerie in the best way. The combination of African groove, post-punk tension, and disco bounce gives their music a restless pulse.
