Sun Ra and the Arkestra: Cosmic Jazz, Funk, and Tradition

During the 1970s, Sun Ra combined the Arkestra’s cosmic philosophy with funk grooves, electric bass, synthesizers, and chant based arrangements. Albums such as Space Is the Place, Lanquidity, and Sleeping Beauty introduced a more accessible sound while retaining the group’s metaphysical themes.
At the same time, Ra never abandoned jazz tradition. Throughout the 1980s and into his final years, the Arkestra continued performing swing standards, Fletcher Henderson arrangements, and Duke Ellington material alongside free improvisation and cosmic works. Tradition and experimentation, Earth and space, existed together inside the same musical language.
By the end of his life, the disciplined Chicago jazz musician and the cosmic philosopher had fully merged into one identity.
