Iran Before 1979: When Persian Music Met Funk, Rock, and Disco

During the 1960s and 1970s, Iran went through rapid urban growth and cultural change under the Pahlavi monarchy. Tehran expanded quickly, media systems modernised, and radio and television spread new music across the country. Nightclubs, cabarets, and hotel venues formed a strong live music circuit in major cities.
Western music entered through radio, imported records, cinema, and touring acts. Funk, soul, rock, and disco shaped a new generation of Iranian musicians who combined these influences with Persian classical traditions. The result was a hybrid sound built on Western rhythm sections, electric guitars, early synthesizers, and Persian melodic systems based on modal structures and vocal ornamentation.
By the 1970s, Iranian pop had become a commercial industry. Googoosh stood as one of its most visible figures, moving between film and music with polished pop arrangements. Artists such as Dariush, Ebi, and Farhad followed different paths across mainstream pop and more reflective songwriting. A parallel experimental scene also developed, where musicians like Kourosh Yaghmaei pushed psychedelic rock, fuzz guitar, and folk based melodies into a distinctly Iranian psych sound.
That period ended in 1979 with the Islamic Revolution. Public pop performance stopped in mainstream spaces, many artists left the country, and others continued in exile. Inside Iran, popular music shifted into controlled or underground forms. What remains from that era is a body of recordings where Persian musical identity and Western pop, funk, disco, and psychedelic rock shared the same space before political change split them into separate histories.
From the 1990s, a state approved pop scene returned inside Iran. It developed under licensing rules from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and ran alongside the large Iranian pop industry in exile. State broadcasting helped shape and promote selected music within this controlled system.
